Dr. Nagalakshmi Chowdhary is the current Chairperson (President) of the Karnataka State Commission for Women, a statutory body established to safeguard women’s rights and address gender-based issues in the state. She has been actively involved in initiatives to improve women’s welfare, grievance redressal, and awareness programs.

Dr. Nagalakshmi Chowdhary has focused on improving women’s safety and awareness through initiatives such as a proposed 24x7 women’s helpline in Bengaluru, counseling programs for boys on crimes against women, and awareness campaigns on cybercrime and gender-based violence in schools and colleges.
She has taken direct action to support victims of violence, including visiting acid attack survivors in Mangaluru and ensuring compensation and medical assistance of up to ₹20 lakh for corrective surgeries. She also conducts Mahila Jan Sunwai grievance hearings to address women’s complaints quickly.
Established in 1997, the Karnataka State Commission for Women is a quasi-judicial body under the Department of Women and Child Development. It works to protect women’s rights, address harassment and discrimination cases, and recommend legal reforms when necessary.
Dr. Chowdhary has actively engaged with communities by inspecting girls’ hostels to ensure safety and welfare. She has also helped vulnerable women and infants access safe facilities and encouraged social responsibility by recognizing citizens who assisted victims of violence.
Her leadership addresses major concerns such as low awareness of government schemes, rising cybercrime, online exploitation of minors, acid attacks, domestic violence, and workplace harassment through awareness-building and direct intervention.
